William Green was born in Hartpury, Gloucestershire circa 1770 and was baptised
there in 1772. On 11th March 1793 he joined the 11th Regiment of Light Dragoons
in the British Army. He spent the next 21 years with the regiment, some of
which was spent fighting Napolean's armies: on the continent in 1794 & 1795, Holland
in 1799, and in Portugal in 1811-1812 during the peninsular war. In late 1798 and early 1799 he was stationed in Sherborne, Dorset. During
this time he got married in the neighbouring parish of Castleton, Dorset on 22 Februay 1798 to Charlotte Walters
from Sherborne. One of the witnesses being a fellow 11th Dragoon.
In 1814, when William retired and became an army pensioner he was described as '
being
worn out from length of service'. He had a fair complexion
with brown hair, hazel eyes and was 5 feet 6 inches tall. He was also described
as '
A deserving good soldier who has invariably conducted horse duty with forbearing,
grace and fidelity.'
After retiring William went to live in Sherborne, Dorset. on 31 May 1839 Charlotte died in Cold Harbour, Sherborne. In the 1841 and 1851 censuses William is shown as
living in Vincent's Court, Newland Street. In 1841, one of his neighbours
was Thomas Vincent who was the brother-in-law to his son
William Miles Green.
William Green died on 30 November in Newland, Sherborne aged 85.
